jumper woman no18 natural

Thick rib cotton knit.

Cool and comfy with a chunky round neck and dropped shoulders, Jumper Woman No.18 is crafted from our favourite Spanish yarn. A nice loose texture, its weight allows the knit to hang just so, while the ribbed hem helps retain its shape.

Un-dyed cotton as part of our natural collection. This cotton is so special: robust yet soft, and full of personality.

Made in Spain.

Materials: 100% Spanish cotton.

It’s a gloomy Tuesday, and I’m back writing about genocide again (as I always seem to be doing). This time, it’s an essay about the former Yugoslavia. I was born in northern Italy but spent the first two years of my life in Zagreb, where my father worked at the U.S. Cultural Center. This was our family’s first tour overseas; my father was a very junior Foreign Service Officer with the United States Information Agency (USIA), and my mother hadn’t yet joined the State Department (the first time she applied to the Foreign Service, the interviewers gestured at her very pregnant body and told her, “clearly you’re now very serious about this job”). I spent my childhood living in countries that were either on the verge of collapse or the edge of revolution. For a long time, I could see the ways in which I had been shaped by the languages and cultures of these places but not by their traumas. It was only in graduate school, after taking a course about “issues of representation” in Holocaust literature, that I began to acknowledge how my thinking, my sense of what it means to be human, had been impacted by living in areas that were sites of genocide. The ground has history, and it seeps into us. Or, it should. Over the summer, I read Trace: Memory, History, Race, and the American Landscape, in which scholar Lauret Savoy writes about the ways that the American landscape contains overlapping and intersecting histories, which have often been erased. It’s a beautifully written book that urges the reader to be more attentive, to look for those silenced narratives in the names of our cities, rivers, valleys, to watch for what the past is trying to tell us. ~

Oversized everything #babaajumperno18 ...

Trying not to dwell on the fact that my pants are way too short—really wishing there was a good extra 2 inches of length. 💔 I tried the tall length instead, but the rise was ridiculously long, it was so drop crotch and ill-fitting. Trying my best to channel my inner melissaanderson and embrace the short pants look, thick calves and cankles be damned!

Have you joined beyond__wear to keep slow fashion slow? I have worked on shifting my consumption habits for the past three year. This year I was doing really good until couple of months ago’s emotional whirlwind..I’ve definitely stress shopped A LOT in the last two months. Looking forward to take on the first quarter challenge; helps when there’s a community to hold each other accountable and share our pains and reflections. Please use the hashtag #byebuychallenge.
EDIT: I’m going to keep track of wear counts as well. Hopefully this will help me shop my closet more!

Thank you, everyone, for all of the lovely birthday wishes yesterday! You helped me to stay positive on what was a very gloomy, cold Monday. Today, I have office hours and grading, a long list of things I should be doing. I am feeling buoyed, however, by the very long conversation I had with one of my dearest friends last night. We used to be colleagues, surviving dozens of miserable department meetings together, often commiserating over pizza and good bourbon. We lived one block away from one another. On many evenings, I would text him or he would text me for an impromptu hang-out, which often included something tasty from Trader Joe’s and then hours of discussion about the writing life. Now, we live halfway across the country from one another and have to make do with phone calls, Skype sessions, and our annual meetups at the AWP Conference (a national writing conference for writers). He’s a brilliant poet and essayist, a person huge heart, genuine and sincere, someone who delights in stories and in the power of humor; whenever we talk, our conversations are a mix of riotous laughter, high culture and low, and, of course, much spilling of the tea. I’m often reminded of what Mr. Bennet says in Pride & Prejudice: “For what do we live, but to make sport for our neighbors, and laugh at them in our turn?” Thank goodness for the friendships that endure, that show us who we used to be and who we are becoming. 💗 ~
