in this room with aki goto

babaà presents “in this room,” a series about the people who inspire us with their beautiful ways, in the rooms and spaces that keep them honest and inspired.

For our second in the series, we visit our friend, Aki Goto, a multi-disciplinary artist originally from Japan who has called the Catskill region home for the past few years. We discovered Aki’s brilliantly edited videos of her children Senka and Yuki on Instagram and immediately wanted to know her. Shawna Ferreira shot Aki in her bedroom, as well in the land outside her house which she uses as an extension of her meditative space.

It is where I wake up in the morning.

It is where I meditate for 5 min to remember I’m here with me to start my day again.
It is where I make my videos and write, and watch screens and have midnight snack.
It’s a place I get inspirations, relaxed, and emotional.
It’s a place I let me be myself.

But sometimes my heart keeps on closing, then I jump outside and look up. There are branches weaving a complex pattern and some creatures being busy inside it. Above that there is a sky, clouds, sometimes stars. It’s crisp. It’s muggy. It’s quiet. It’s kind.
This big room reminds me that I’m just one of the elements of the whole.

Thank you to Shawna Ferreira for the images and Aki for sharing her space with us.
