in this room with alex rita

For the fourth in our series we visit Alex Rita, a multidisciplinary artist who works within music, illustration, and sewing, in the old council estate in Deptford, south-east London where she lives. She brings her appreciation for the natural world into her practices; the creative director of record label, and musical community, Touching Bass, and her meditative NTS Radio show, live series and concept space, Calm Roots. When we first met Alex during one of our events in London we were struck immediately by her authenticity and beauty. We were so happy to get a chance to visit her in her home studio before her baby arrives.

In this room, I’ve rediscovered myself time and time again. It is the place where I’ve grown the most as a human, and had my most profound thoughts and realisations.

It’s also the first and only place I’ve lived in London, having spent ten years here; the longest I’ve lived anywhere. As I’ve grown I’ve realised I’m very observant of energies. Seeing and feeling them around me – be it in people, objects or sound – and combining them into special moments and experiences has become key to my artistic practice. Everything starts from here.

Soon I am about to give birth here to my first Sun. I can’t wait for his energy to radiate in this room and share sounds, nature and all of life’s intricacies with him.” – Alex Rita
